Spain: Instituto Nacional de Seguridad e Higiene en el Trabajo (INSHT)
INSHT is the specialized scientific/technical body of the Spanish Government Administration in OSH matters. It was created in 1978 as an autonomous body belonging to the Ministry of Labour and Immigration and focused on analyzing, promoting, supporting and improving OSH issues.

Action points:

• Technical assistance: providing specialized technical assistance to different departments of the administration, to stakeholders and also to OSH experts from public institutions or private companies. This activity represents approximately 30% of its global resources.

• Study/Research on OSH: OSH research on various fields: Social research (ie.: Working conditions surveys); Epidemiological studies based on working accidents; field and laboratory research on chemicals, physical agents and ergonomics. Research promotion: supporting and launching biannual research grants.

• Training: An annual program of regular activities is designed and carried out.

• Promotion/Information/Dissemination: Every three months a technical magazine is edited. Also edited: several specialized publications such as chemical measurements methods or the collection of the Prevention Technical Notes. OSH Posters and leaflets.

• Guidelines/Standardization: Technical assistance in OSH issues to the development of new legislation, regulation and guidelines. Standardization process: INSHT collaborates in technical committees to the formulation of UNE, EN and ISO standards.

• Testing/Certification of protective equipment and machinery.

• Secretariat of the National Commission for Safety and Health at Work:
INSHT give technical support and secretariat assistance to the National Commission for Safety and Health at Work, tripartite organism that supervises and coordinates OSH actions at nation level.
