AUVA is the social insurance for occupational risks for more than 3,3 million working people and 1.4 million pupils and students. It is financed mainly by contributions paid by employers. Its legal duties are: prevention of occupational accidents and diseases, occupational medical care, first aid for occupational accidents, post traumatic treatment, rehabilitation, financial compensation and research.
AUVA offers advice, training, expert opinion and information in all questions related to occupational safety and health, to adapt the working process, the workplace and the individual protection. Safety experts visit the companies: they inform, advice and cooperate to find solutions. They offer safety and health assessment, counselling and training for employers and employees. They carry out safety and health protection activities.
Materials, equipment, machines and work processes are investigated with the aim of creating a human and safe working environment. The Safety Technology Testing and Research Centre carries out fundamental research and development. The Technical Safety Laboratory, a certified and officially licenced testing facility, offers European Conformity testing for manufacturers and producers.

NFA monitors, analyses and explores the working environment
The National Research Centre for the Working Environment (NFA) is a government research institute under the Ministry of Employment. The mission of the NFA is to monitor, analyse and explore conditions in the working environment of importance to health, safety and work role functioning.
NFA serves as a knowledge base for the Ministry of Employment, the social partners and working environment counsellors.
NFA serves as a knowledge base for the administrative and legislative work of the Ministry of Employment. Furthermore, NFA disseminates research based knowledge to the social partners, enterprises and working environment counsellors, contributes to further education at the universities and serves as a gateway to working environment knowledge for enterprises through the Working Environment Information Centre.

The NFA played a major role in establishing the scientific background knowledge for the development of the current National Working Environment Strategy 2010. The research strategy of the NFA is designed to support achievement of the goals of this national strategy just as it aims at preventing even longer term challenges. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) is a multidisciplinary research and specialist organization in the field of occupational health and safety. FIOH is a national governmental institute covering relevant research aspects of work life and conditions of work, including surveillance of working conditions, well-being at work, physical, chemical, biological and physiological exposures, occupational medicine, psychology and stress, epidemiology, safety and organization of work. The main functions of the Institute are research, specialist advisory services, training and communications. Our clients are workplaces, citizens, government officials, occupational health services, and other organizations, which work to improve well-being at work and disseminate related information.
The Institute was founded in 1945 by the State Medical Board and social partners from industry and trade unions, insurance institutions and the Ministry of Social Affairs. In 1978 the Institute was nationalized under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The board of directors of the Institute consists of representatives from Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Ministry of Employment and the Economy, labour Organizations and employer organizations.
The Institute receives state subsidies which cover 80% of the costs of the operations that have been approved by Parliament as being eligible for state funding, and is expected to raise funding for the remaining 20% itself. Currently, the Institute aims at funding about 200 work-year equivalents entirely with income from its own operations. This funding model means that its own income will account for about 40% of the total expenditure.
The permanent staff amounts to 540 and the whole person years to 750. The number of research staff with PhD degree is around 130 and the total number of R&D personnel around 500, which is around 60% of the whole personnel. Annually there are about 200 ongoing research projects consuming about 40% of the working hours. The R&D expenditure amounts close to 30 MEUR yearly. The proportion of specialist advisory services amounts to 40% of the working hours, training is 10 % and communications is 10% of the working hours.

The mission of the Institute is to promote occupational health and safety as part of good living.
Strategic goals of the Institute are Safe and meaningful work, Supportive organizations, Effective occupational health services and Flourishing workers. By fulfilling these goals, the Institute increases participation in work life at all stages of a person’s career.
Organizationally the Institute is divided to three areas of activity which are: Influence through knowledge, Creating solutions and Client services.
Influence through knowledge area is further divided to strategic communication, publishing and library services and surveillance and reviews. The area gathers and assesses research data on the quality of work life, on the connections between working conditions and well-being and on the future of work life. It creates an impact through different channels of communication, building knowledge base concerning work and well-being and providing specialist support for society’s decision-makers and legislators.
Creating solutions area is further divided to nine themes, which are:

Creating solutions -area carries out high-level research that meets the demands of work life. It converts the results of scientific research into innovative cost-effective solutions. The nine above-mentioned themes have been chosen to address the current challenges facing work life and to predict future changes.

The FIOH offers to the clients chargeable specialist advisory services, training, and information packages with which to improve the well-being of personnel at workplaces, increase the long run productivity of operations and fulfil the statutory obligations concerning health and safety. Through the Regional Offices, the services of FIOH are available throughout Finland.
In addition to general solutions, the FIOH offers tools and special solutions for small businesses and sectors of activity in which well-being at work is a challenge. Qualifications and complementary training in OHS is one of the central tasks of the FIOH. The FIOH trains specialists in occupational medicine, occupational health nurses, and other OHS professionals and specialists. The FIOH offers services in the most demanding level of occupational disease diagnostics as well as in work ability and functional capacity assessments.
FIOH has participated in several EU-projects of various EU-programmes (total around 200 projects of different sizes). In addition, the FIOH specialists contribute to various EU advisory bodies and standardization groups.
FIOH is an active member of the Bilbao Agency Topic Centres. The Institute has coordinated several Topic Centres and is currently coordinating a large TC Occupational Safety and Health.
The Institute produces annually about 400–500 international research reports majority of which are peer reviewed. FIOH is a member of the group of European institutes in occupational health and safety (PEROSH) and works in close collaboration with most of the EU research centres active in OH&S.
The Institute acts as a specialist institute of the World Health Organization and the International Labour Office in the field of occupational health.
- National Research and Safety Institute for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases
The National Research and Safety Institute for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases (INRS) is a French Institute competent in the area of occupational risk prevention: protecting workers’ health and safety and preventing occupational accidents or diseases. Its missions include: anticipating needs (with studies and research programmes), raising awareness (via information products, prevention campaigns) and assistance (through technical guidance, information resources, training).Created in 1947, INS became in 1968 INRS, a non-profit making association (Act of 1901), founded under the aegis of the CNAMTS and subject to financial control of the State. The Institute operates within the occupational risk prevention policy defined by the public authorities,
in line with CNAMTS directives. It is governed by a joint board of directors (9 employer representatives, 9 employeeunion representatives).
Its budget – approximately 80 million – mainly comes from the National Occupational Accident and Disease Prevention Fund provisioned by a portion of the occupational accident and disease contributions paid by companies.The Institute s scientific, technical and medical competencies span over many fields dedicated to the management of occupational risks.
The divisions also develop a working mode with interdisciplinary projects allowing to link practical knowledge with end users: stress, recycling waste, road accident risks, biological risks, fibres, etc.Twelve divisions gather high-level experts:

The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) is a governmental research institute directly responsible to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS). Its main task is to provide scientifically based advice to the BMAS in all matters of occupational safety and health (OSH) and of the humane design / organisation of working conditions. BAuA operates as the interface between science and politics and renders transfer services from the science system into policy, corporate practice and the broader society and vice versa.
BAuA’s research concentrates on a strategy-based programme research and systematic activities for the predictive scientific analysis of relevant trends and developments within the framework of OSH (“forecast of emerging risks”). Strategic research topics are:
- the effects of new technologies on safety and health at work
- mental workload against the background of new types of work
- the multifactoral genesis of work-related diseases.
BAuA’s development activities tackle contemporary questions of policy, the formulation of the legal framework in the European and national contexts, corporate practice and new knowledge gained through research.
The BAuA’s core task is to provide scientific advice in matters of policy. For this purpose it provides the governmental departments with scientifically sound and purposefully prepared knowledge to enable them to take decisions with respect to political action. Additionally, BAuA participates in the opinion-forming process in the wider society in all matters of OSH as well as the humane organisation of work.
BAuA has been assigned sovereign duties which arise from the government’s protective duty with respect to citizens or the environment. The major elements are: enforcement of provisions under chemicals legislation, support for the authorities responsible for market surveillance and the information and notification obligations in the area of product safety, and the securing of documents in the health data archive of the Wismut Company.
Knowledge transfer and communication
Transfer is the need-oriented and practice-appropriate transmission of statutory regulations and science-based methods in the form of practical guidelines for companies and consulting institutions. It includes the preparation of the subject matter for the specific target groups and the creation of suitable distribution routes.
Educational and knowledge transfer – DASA
As an interactive educational institution, the German Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition (DASA) provides a didactic experience and learning venue at which preventive notions and actions are imparted.
With its method of informal and non-formal learning, its teaching expertise covers mainly orientation knowledge as well as knowledge relating to identity and action.
- Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA)
IFA, the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (the former BGIA) is an institute of the German statutory accident insurers for the industrial and the public sector. As such IFA gives support to these institutions in all scientific and technical issues relating to the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases. 240 persons are involved in research, consultancy and testing in the following fields of interest: hazardous chemicals, biological agents, physical factors such as noise, vibration and radiation, safety of machinery including usability, ergonomics, epidemiology and toxicology.
IFA cooperates closely with other research institutions and universities, both on a national and on an international level. As concerns issues of product safety, IFA is also in close contact with industry: It is a nationally and European notified test and certification body under the terms of the European Directives for Personal Protective Equipment and Machinery. Besides that, it helps manufacturers to develop and optimize safe products for the world market.
Participation in standardisation and regulation-setting bodies is also part of IFA’s tasks. The majority of research issues stem from practice and deal with OSH problems encountered at company-level. IFA’s working results therefore have to be extremely field-oriented. Consequently, little basic research is done by IFA. At the same time, there is a close connection and exchange of information between research and other fields of activity relevant to prevention such as to further synergies and keep up-to-date in the state of the art of prevention. INAIL – the Italian Workers Compensation Authority – pursues several objectives: the reduction of accidents at work, the insurance of workers involved in risky activities; the re-integration in the labour market and in social life of work accident victims.
This type of insurance, compulsory for all employers hiring workers in activities which the law defines as risky, protects workers from any kind of damage resulting from work related accidents and occupational diseases freeing employers from any civil liability.
The safeguard of workers is now more than ever an integrated protection system – as a result also of recent innovative provisions of law-ranging from prevention on the workplace to health and economic benefits, medical treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration in the social and working life of victims of physical damage consequent to a work related accident or professional disease.
With a view to contributing to the reduction of accidents, INAIL has also implemented a number of important tools to continually monitor employment and accident trends, it provides small and medium size enterprises with training and advice in the field of prevention and funds companies that decide to invest in the improvement of safety.
Since 1 June 2010, in addition to carrying out its mandate, INAIL is also charged with all the tasks carried out by the former Italian National Institute for Occupational Safety and Prevention (ISPESL) tasks, incorporated into INAIL. Therefore the continuity of OSH research activities, both at a national and at an international level, is guaranteed by a new statutory organisation that is being defined.

The business unit Healthy, Vital and Safe Work is an important partner for public and private sectors in the area of occupational safety and health and other work-related issues.
STAMI’s vision is that Norwegian working life shall be capable of creating a work environment that prevents sickness and promotes good health. The objective is to generate knowledge about the connection between work, sickness and health, determine these connections, evaluate risks and suggest preventive measures, and spread knowledge about the relationship between health and work as known in Norway.
The National Institute of Occupational Health is a research institute organised under the Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion. The Institute has a staff of more than one hundred who generate, apply and communicate knowledge about work and health.
STAMI’s employees constitute a cross-professional group with expertise in the fields of medicine, chemistry, biology, psychology and other disciplines. The institute is involved in more than 60 research projects every year. Some of these are research projects lasting several years; others are evaluations and studies with a more practical foundation.
The Institute is concerned with all sectors of Norwegian working life
STAMI maps environmental and health needs, assesses risks and suggests preventive measures at the work place. The institute has a clinic for occupational medicine where patients with possible occupation-related illnesses are investigated. The library is open for all. The institute also provides training for security and health personnel and other professionals. STAMI replies to all questions relating to work and health.
In accordance with the Institute’s statute of 16 February 2005, the mission of the Central Institute for Labour protection is:
- carrying out scientific research aimed at new technological and organisational solutions, which are useful in the design of working conditions that conform to occupational safety and ergonomics requirements,
- determining scientific foundations for the development of socio-economic policies of the Republic of Poland in the field of occupational safety and health.
The Institute was established in 1950 by the act of the Polish Parliament of 4 April 1950. Being the leading Polish institution in the field of occupational safety & health (OSH), in 2002 it was granted the status of a national research Institute by the Council of Ministers.
Aims and activities
The aim of the Institute is carrying out interdisciplinary research, including studies of broadly understood human protection in the working environment. It includes the following scientific disciplines: medical sciences (preclinical), social sciences, technical sciences (engineering and environmental protection). Research and development activities are related to the following fields:
- identification and prevention of chemical and aerosol hazards,
- noise, vibration and EMFs,
- safety engineering,
- ergonomics and work physiology,
- stress at work,
- optimisation of work processes,
- static electricity and ionization,
- optical radiation and lighting of work places,
- prevention of major industrial accident hazards,
- personal protective equipment,
- OSH management systems,
- education and dissemination of information in the area of OSH and ergonomics.
The multidisciplinary approach of the Institute, integrating different branches of science, offers the unique opportunity to create a critical concentration of Polish research focused on the improvement of safety and health in the working environment.
The Central Institute for Labour Protection – National Research Institute (CIOP-PIB) is a legally, organisationally, economically and financially independent state body. It is supervised by the Minister of Labour and Social Policy.
The National Institute of Safety and Health at Work (Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo (INSST)), founded in 1978, is the specialised scientific and technical institute in the field of OSH under the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. INSST comprises four National Centres, each one specialised in different fields of OSH research.
The mission of INSST is the analysis and study of the health and safety conditions in the workplace, as well as their promotion and provide support for their improvement. To meet its objectives, it establishes the necessary cooperation with bodies of the Autonomous Communities (regions) and the State Administration involved with health and safety at work, as well as with social partners.
The INSST has, among others, the following functions:
- Concerning research, its primary mission is to analyse and study health and safety conditions at work, in order to determine the causes of occupational illnesses and injuries, and to recognise new and emerging occupational hazards to be able to prevent them. The INSST also promotes and coordinates a health and safety at work research network of public institutes.
- To provide the required specialised and differentiated technical support to public bodies, employers and employees organisations, as well as the necessary technical assistance in developing legal and technical regulations on the prevention of occupational risks, at both national and international level.
- To promote awareness of occupational risk prevention, acting as a driving force, and carrying out training, information, research, study and dissemination activities in the field of occupational risk prevention.
- To promote and support the integration of OSH training in all programs and educational levels, actively participating in specialised training in this field and developing support elements, training materials, and specialised documentation.
At the international level, the INSST collaborates with Governments and Institutions of other countries in the development of health and safety at work, and forms part of different European specialised networks – among others is the National Reference Centre for Institutions of the European Union.
In addition to those already mentioned, the functions of the INSST are any others which may be necessary for the achievement of its end goals and which may be assigned to it within the scope of its competencies.

Affiliated to the universities of Lausanne and Geneva, the Institute for Work and Health (IST, Institut universitaire romand de Santé au Travail) is a foundation under private law, mainly supported by the cantons of Vaud and Geneva. Its mission is research, teaching, assessment and consultancy as well as promotion in the field of occupational health. As part of its public health mission, IST is dedicated to the development of the relationship between work and health. It contributes to the promotion of healthy working conditions for the workers, the economy and the society. Located at Lausanne University Hospital Center (CHUV), the Institute for Work and Health is made up of four distinct divisions: Workers’ Health, Work Environment, Medical consultations and Services. IST has over eighty employees. IST is the only organisation of this kind and with this scope in Switzerland and its specialists have already gained a national and international reputation in their disciplines.
As a research organization, IST aims to disseminate occupational health knowledge and contribute to the progress of the scientific community, while bringing relevant support to the regional and national stakeholders. In this context, the Institute produces applied research around key themes in occupational health. His field of study covers the areas of exposure science, environmental engineering, occupational medicine and Human Factors.
